Mahogany Obsidian stone is a natural volcanic glass.  It is the result of volcanic eruption when hot lava comes in contact with water, which results in a glassy texture.  It has a high concentration of iron.  This stone is very similar to the composition granite and rhyolite.  Obsidian is not made of mineral crystals; therefore, it is not a true rock. The best quality Mahogany Obsidian Stone can be found below the ground surface around volcanic lava.

Mahogany Obsidian can be described as a sharp, shiny, and deep reddish-brown with black inclusions.  Obsidian is a relatively soft, with a typical hardness of roughly 5.5 on the mineral scale compared to quartz which has a hardness of 7.0. This stone can be found in Afghanistan, Japan, South America, and in part of the U.S. (West)  just to name a few.

Mahogany Obsidian Stone has a long history as it has been dated back to the Stone Age, when it was used for tool making and as an ornamental stone.  Obsidian is believed to remove pain and improves circulation.  The Hawaiians believed this stone to be scared.
